Like Moths to a Flame
I have dodged many moths when coming in from outside at night. They gather and flit around the yard light and the porch light. So I did a little research on nocturnal (night time) moths.
Here is what I found. Most nocturnally active moths are attracted to light sources. This phenomenon is known as positive phototaxis. Or the bodily movement toward the source of light.
John 1:4 states “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.” Verse 9 states “That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.” So this makes Jesus the light and man is the moth. This is the way it was planned from the beginning of time. Man was created to be drawn to God, the source of all light.
Moths used the moon and stars to orientate themselves. And it would find its way by adjusting its flight path to keep the light source at a constant angle to its eye. They have a natural instinct to be drawn to light.
In John 8:12 Jesus states “I am the light of the wold. He who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” We were created with the same natural tendency to be drawn towards and follow the Light, Jesus Christ. Stay with me on this. I’m getting to the good part.
As more and more artificial sources of light were inserted into the world, moths lost the ability to follow the stars and moon. They became confused by all the artificial lights and would fly too close to lights that could burn their wings and potentially kill them.
In 2 Corinthians 4:3-4 it is stated,
“ But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.”
A lot of artificial light is being shined on this world. Diluting the Word of God. Causing people to get confused and to stray from the truth. Causing shadows, dark places, and gray to become acceptable instead of the pure light of God. I can hear God calling us to return to the Light and come out of the dark places. There is one thing I am certain of. “This is the message we have heard from Him and [I] declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.” 1 John 1:5 For this reason we must remove all darkness from our lives and keep our light bright and pure. We are called to be lights in a dark world guiding others to the Light.
