God Doesn’t Speak to Me 😫
“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things that you do not know.”
Jeremiah 33:3
Growing up in a family of preachers and teachers, I heard a lot of God gave me, God laid it on my heart, and God spoke to me… So I would listen real hard at prayer time, but I never heard anything. I figured maybe I was too young or too short for God to talk to! It’s hard to explain or understand the concept of God talking to you as a child.
I can tell you without a doubt that God does speak to us. We have to listen for His voice. Does He speak audibly? Yes. Has He spoken to me audibly? Yes, I have heard my name called by Him in the night. You may say “you were just hearing things.” And you are right. I was hearing the voice of my Heavenly Father. You may feel you’re not ready for that kind of face to face with God. There are other ways to hear His voice.
Through the scripture (read 2 Timothy 3:16-17)
We have lots of questions about things. Are they right? Are they wrong? What does God think about this? Most likely if you search the Bible on any subject you will find a scripture based answer. Should I lie? Colossians 3:9 says “Do not lie one to another”. Here’s one for adults and kids. Should I share? Hebrews 13:16 says “ but do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.” Try it out. God speaks to His people through the Word. This is why it is good to hide His Word in our hearts.
Through other people. (Read Ephesians 4:15-16)
Other Christians in our life will speak into our life. They verify directly or indirectly what we have been feeling we should be doing, somewhere we should go or someone we need to talk to. We are a whole body, “joined and knit together by what every joint supplies” (Ephesians 4:16). Just like our natural body works together, the body of Christ - the church - should work together. God uses us to supply strength and confirmation. We just need to recognize God’s leading.
By whispering to our hearts. (Jeremiah 33:3)
This is probably the hardest to believe would happen and decipher from the rest of our garbled thoughts. First, why in the world would God speak to us! Because “we are His people and the sheep of His pasture.” Psalm 100:3 Okay we got that settled!
The more you listen, the more you will hear. Mark 4:23 “ If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.” Someone once asked, “so how do you know the difference between your own conscious and God’s voice?” My brilliant sister explained it like this. The closer you get to God your conscious and His voice become one. John 10:27 “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.”
Practice listening. Sometimes we go to prayer and we have a list of things we rattle off. Get up. Dust off our knees. And check that off my list as done. Just sit quietly in His presence. No rush. Just say here I am Lord. I’m listening.
