The Parable of The Seed

When we think of the parable of the seeds, we think of the story of seed placement.  You know. Some fell by the wayside, some fell on stony ground, some fell among the weeds, some fell on good ground… And on and on. We all know that story

I, personally, am a gardener and I get all that.  I like the other parable of the seed, singular.  “What one is that?” you say. Read on… Here is The Parable of The Seed.

Jesus also told them this parable: “God’s kingdom realm is like someone spreading seed on the ground. He goes to bed and gets up, day after day, and the seed sprouts and grows tall, though he knows not how. All by itself it sprouts, and the soil produces a crop; first the green stem, then the head on the stalk, and then the fully developed grain in the head. Then, when the grain is ripe, he immediately puts the sickle to the grain, because harvest time has come.                Mark‬ ‭4‬:‭26‬-‭29‬ ‭TPT‬‬

I know the basics of planting seed… Dig a hole. Put a seed in. Water. Wait. And wait. And WAIT. If you dig it up or even just pull the dirt back to see if it’s growing, you will damage or kill it.  So we wait.  It’s a mystery what happens to the seed. And how the plant knows when and how to break out of the hard outer shell. The seed even knows when to push out of the soil and what kind of plant it is. All this is done without our intervention!  Okay soooo…

Why, when God asks us to plant the seed of the Gospel, by witnessing to, praying for, or just showing kindness to someone, do we expect to see a fully grown mature Christian immediately pop up out of the ground in front of us.  We go away disgruntled, disappointed, and/or confused because we see nothing but dirt. The formula is easy.

The seed is planted -> The mystery of the soil and the seed happens -> The seed grows, matures, and puts out fruit -> Then the harvest.

Between the planting and the harvest is the longest, hardest part.  God doesn’t expect us to personally save, heal, change, or push the situation along. All we have to do is. Plant. The. Seed. Pray - yes. Show kindness - yes. Never lose hope - a big YES.  But let the mystery of what God does in each situation happen without your help.   Just keep planting more seed. Why?

1Corinthians 3:7 (NKJV) states the matter clearly. “So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase.”  God gives the increase!
